Tonic: A Flexible and Efficient Lighting Solution for Retail Spaces

Richard Garrett

In today’s fast-paced retail landscape, sustainable lighting solutions play a critical role in elevating customer experience, highlighting products, and supporting environmental goals. Our latest Tonic spotlight family is designed with sustainability in mind, featuring a modular structure and interchangeable components that enhance store efficiency while reducing environmental impact. Whilst Tonic focuses on lowering energy use across an estate, it also empowers retailers to achieve their sustainability objectives without compromising on style or functionality.

Flexibility Through Interchangeable Reflectors

The new Tonic spotlight features interchangeable reflectors, which allow users to switch beam angles to adapt to different store designs and layout changes. Instead of replacing an entire fixture when lighting requirements shift - such as changing from a narrow spotlight for focused product displays to a wide flood for larger areas - users can simply swap out the reflector to meet the new beam angle requirements.

This adaptability is aided by Tonic’s easy-to-use "twist and lock" mechanism, which makes switching reflectors a really simple process. From a narrow 17° spot for precise accent lighting to a broad 60° flood for general illumination, Tonic ensures that lighting remains effective and adaptable without the need for new luminaires. This not only provides flexibility in design but also leads to reduced waste, as the spotlight’s components can be upgraded rather than replaced entirely.

Reducing Complexity and SKU Management

Another major advantage of Tonic’s design is its ability to streamline inventory and reduce the need for multiple SKUs (stock-keeping units) in the warehouse. With its interchangeable reflectors, retailers can keep fewer lighting models in stock, as one fixture can be easily modified for different applications. Fewer SKUs mean less storage space required in the warehouse, reduced transportation needs, and ultimately lower CO2 emissions associated with shipping and warehousing.

Energy Efficiency and Long Lifetime

Tonic spotlights are designed with high efficiency in mind. With a lumen output of up to 3650 lm and an efficacy of 120 lm/W, Tonic delivers bright, consistent lighting while consuming less energy. This level of efficiency is crucial in retail environments where lighting is often required for long periods each day. Tonic’s energy-saving capabilities not only reduce operational costs but also support retailers' sustainability efforts by lowering energy consumption.

In addition, Tonic spotlights are built to last. With a 50,000-hour lifetime (L80), they maintain their performance for years, further minimising the need for replacements and reducing waste.

Modular Design for Easy Maintenance and Upgrades

A key element of Tonic’s sustainability is its modularity. By designing the spotlight with detachable and recyclable components, we have created a product that is easy to maintain and upgrade. For example, the 3-phase track integrated driver can be easily swapped out by a qualified technician, ensuring that the luminaire can be kept operational for an extended period without the need for a full replacement. This approach aligns with the principles of circular design by enabling ongoing use and reducing the amount of material that ends up in landfill.

The use of recyclable materials such as aluminium and high-quality plastics further underscores Tonic’s commitment to sustainability. These materials can be recycled at the end of the product’s lifecycle, contributing to a circular economy where resources are reused rather than discarded.

Contributing to Sustainability Goals

Tonic also utilises recyclable materials, which when responsibly managed at the end of its lifecycle, can contribute to a more robust circular economy where resources can be reused rather than discarded. This ensures that it not only meets the functional demands of retail environments but also contributes to the broader focus of aligning to retailers ESG goals.

Tonic’s approach reflects a growing trend in retail lighting where we need to balance the need for high performance with the goal of reducing environmental impact. By offering a product that reduces SKUs, saves space, minimises transportation, and lowers CO2 emissions, Tonic represents flexibility, efficiency, and environmental responsibility in a world where customer experience remains paramount.
